Voyages Indigenous Tourism has announced that the iconic Field of Light installation at Uluṟu, created by artist Bruce Munro, has been refurbished and extended until at least April 2027. Its dining experience has also been enhanced.

As night falls over the vast expanse of the Red Centre, a breathtaking transformation takes place. The ochre sands of the Australian outback, so stark and dramatic in the daylight, become the canvas for a mesmerizing display of color and light. Field of Light, known in Pitjantjatjara as Tili Wiru Tjuta Nyakunytjaku, meaning "looking at lots of beautiful lights", is an immersive art installation that brings a dreamlike glow to the landscape surrounding Uluṟu, one of the world’s most sacred and awe-inspiring natural wonders.

Created by British artist Bruce Munro, this spectacular light installation features 50,000 solar-powered spindles of light, each one glowing softly in shifting hues of violet, blue, and ochre. Spanning an area equivalent to seven football fields, the lights pulse and sway with the gentle evening breeze, creating the illusion of a vast desert garden in perpetual bloom. The installation is inspired by Munro’s first encounter with Uluṟu in 1992, when he was deeply moved by the energy and vastness of the landscape. More than two decades later, that inspiration took form in this ephemeral, glowing artwork, designed to symbolize the desert coming to life after rain, much like the vibrant wildflowers that sporadically blanket the region after rare downpours.

Each night, as the sun dips below the horizon and the last golden light fades from Uluṟu’s red surface, Field of Light awakens in an ethereal glow, drawing visitors into its hypnotic embrace. The installation is entirely solar-powered, a tribute to the harmony between art, nature, and sustainability. Throughout the evening, guests can wander the winding pathways that snake through this luminous landscape, experiencing a deep sensory connection to the land and its ancient stories.

For the Anangu people, the Traditional Custodians of the land, this installation resonates with their Tjukurpa—the sacred knowledge and creation stories that have been passed down for generations. The soft, rhythmic pulsation of the lights echoes the spiritual essence of the desert, honoring the connection between land, sky, and time. Visitors are invited not just to witness, but to immerse themselves in this fleeting yet eternal dance of light and shadow, where the past and present blend into a luminous dreamscape under the vast, star-filled sky.

Now extended until April 2027, Field of Light continues to cast its spell on travelers from around the world, offering an unforgettable experience in the heart of Australia’s Red Centre.

A Night at Field of Light dining experience

Additionally, the exclusive "A Night at Field of Light" dining experience has been upgraded, offering visitors an even more immersive and unforgettable evening in the heart of the Australian outback. Guests can now enjoy enhanced stargazing through telescopes, allowing for breathtaking views of the southern night sky, a refreshed gourmet menu featuring innovative dishes such as pineapple and lemon myrtle gazpacho and smoked kangaroo, as well as new table décor that complements the ethereal glow of Bruce Munro’s Field of Light installation.

The journey begins with a comfortable transfer from your accommodation at Ayers Rock Resort, where anticipation builds as the outback stretches endlessly around you. As the sun dips toward the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant hues of red, orange, and purple, you arrive at a secluded sand dune offering panoramic views of Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

A warm welcome awaits as you step onto the dune’s viewing platform, where chilled sparkling wine and non-alcoholic beverages are served. The sound of a didgeridoo resonates through the air, setting the tone for an evening of cultural and sensory immersion. The sky begins its slow transformation, casting a golden glow over the landscape as guests take in one of the most spectacular sunsets on Earth.

A culinary journey inspired by the Outback

As twilight deepens, guests are led to an elegantly set outdoor dining area, where a three-course bush tucker-inspired buffet awaits. The newly refreshed menu highlights native Australian flavors, featuring dishes like:

  • Pineapple and lemon myrtle gazpacho, a refreshing entrée that balances sweetness and citrusy herbal notes
  • Smoked kangaroo, a rich and flavorful dish that offers an authentic taste of the outback
  • A variety of locally inspired delicacies, paired with premium Australian wines and beers

As you savor each bite, the desert around you begins to glow with 50,000 softly pulsing lights, signaling the awakening of the Field of Light. This monumental solar-powered installation, stretching over seven football fields, symbolizes the desert blooming after rain, with hues of violet, blue, and ochre slowly shifting in a mesmerizing dance.

Once dinner concludes, the evening takes a celestial turn. Under the crystal-clear outback sky, a resident star talker guides guests through the constellations of the southern hemisphere, sharing Indigenous stories and scientific insights about the stars, planets, and galaxies visible above. The new enhanced stargazing telescopes allow for an even closer look at celestial wonders, deepening the connection between the land and the universe above.

To conclude this extraordinary experience, guests are invited to embark on a self-guided walk through the Field of Light. Strolling along illuminated pathways, you become fully immersed in this dreamlike landscape, where art, technology, and nature converge in a breathtaking spectacle. The lights seem to breathe with the rhythm of the desert, their gentle glow echoing the stories of the land.

Before returning to your hotel, there’s a final moment to pause at the dune viewing area, where a sweet treat, hot chocolate, or port is served as you take in one last view of this radiant masterpiece. Then, under the vast, starlit sky, you board your transfer back to Ayers Rock Resort, carrying with you the memory of a night unlike any other—one that seamlessly blends the ancient and the contemporary, the earthly and the celestial, the real and the dreamlike.
